The noun megumi means blessing or mercy.

The verb megumu means “to bless.” Its passive form is megumareru meaning blessed. If you want to tell that somebody is lucky, you can say, megumareteiru, which means that they are blessed. On contrary, unfortunate people are described as “megumarenai hito bito or “megumarenai hitotachi.” Similarly, unfortunate children are “megumarenai kodomotachi.”

Although this is an unseasonable topic, people eat a sushi roll called “e maki” on the first day of spring. This is a ritual warding off evil fortune. When you do this, you need to face a lucky direction, which changes every year. Ehō means a lucky direction. Maki means a roll. It’s around February 4th.

Wisdom is chie. If you study too hard, you might have a fever called chienetsu, of which the netsu means fever.
