"Subtraction or Difference" in Japanese Calligraphy

by Nao

sa-su, sa

In arithmetic, after you subtract one number from another, the answer you get is “sa.” This is the basic idea behind this character.

In general, a difference is “sa.” If there is a difference between two things, we say, “sa ga aru.” If you obtain an advantage over your rivals, what you have achieved is described as “sa wo tsuketa.” As a result, if the difference becomes noticeable, you can say, “sa ga tsuita.”

sa or kōsaten is an intersection or a junction. The verb sasuru is to intersect.

Jisa is a time difference.

Sabetsu is discrimination. Sabetsuka means differentiation not in the sense that mathematicians use. Kakusa is inequality.

Sasu is a verb meaning to pour water or to cast. With the phrase “mizuwosasu,” you might mean not only to pour water into something physically but also to disturb somebody especially when their affairs such as relationships and projects are going on very well. Sasu meaning to cast may sound poetic. For example, akanesasusora is the sky tinged with crimson.
