Numbers or Several

Numbers are kazu, sū, or sūji. Kazoeru means to count. “Kazu wo kazoeru” means to count numbers.

Sū is also used to refer to an imprecise number of people or things that is as much as several or some. The following expressions represent some time spans.

• sūbyō …several seconds
• sūfun … several minutes
• sūjikan …  several hours
• sūjitsu … several days
• sūshū … several weeks
• sūkagetsu … several months
• sūnen … several years

Sūnin is several people but ninzū is the number of people. Both include the same characters in the opposite order. Zū is the voiced sound of sū.

Mathematics is sūgaku. Here are some expressions used in math.

• shōsū … a decimal
• bunsū … a fraction
• teisū … a constant
• sosū … a prime number
• kisū … an odd number
• gūsū … an even number

1. Draw the dot in the upper left corner of the character.
2. Draw the sweeping dot next to the vertical stroke. The first two dots are connected in the air.
3. Draw the horizontal stroke.
4. Draw the vertical stroke.
5. Draw the sweeping stroke from where the previous strokes intersect.
6. Draw the dot.
7. Draw the rotated chevron shape.
8. Draw the sweeping stroke heading toward the lower left corner of the character.
9. Draw the horizontal stroke. This stroke is sweeping.
10. Begin to draw the right-hand side. Draw the sweeping stroke from the top.
11. Draw the horizontal stroke touching the previous stroke.
12. Draw the sweeping stroke from the center of the horizontal stroke to the lower left.
13. Draw the sweeping stroke from just below the tenth stroke to the lower right corner of the character. Make it broader gradually.
