The night is “yoru.” The middle of the night is “yonaka.” Dawn is “yoa ke.” Last night is “sakuya.” Tonight is “kon’ya.” Kon means now. These words express time.

Things you do at night or in the night are working the night shift (yakin) and staying up late (yofukashi). The noun fukashi is derived from the verb “fukasu” meaning staying up late.
