yoru, yo, ya
The night is “yoru.” The middle of the night is “yonaka.” Dawn is “yoa ke.” Last night is “sakuya.” Tonight is “kon’ya.” Kon means now. These words express time.
Things you do at night or in the night are working the night shift (yakin) and staying up late (yofukashi). The noun fukashi is derived from the verb “fukasu” meaning staying up late.
A light meal you eat at night is “yasyoku.”
Night buses and trains are called “yakō.” With the same characters and sei, nocturnal animals are described as yakōsei.
- Draw the dot on the top.
- Draw the horizontal line.
- Draw the sweeping stroke on the left side of the character.
- Draw the vertical stroke.
- Draw the sweeping stroke below the center of the horizontal line.
- Draw the hook. The latter part is sweeping stroke.
- Draw the dot between the two sweeping strokes.
- Draw the longest sweeping stroke heading toward the lower right corner of the character.
