This character implies measurement.

The verb haka-ru means to plan or to measure. The word Kei is either a plan or a sum.

Compounds that include kei are categorized into two categories.

Plan (Measurement)

Livelihood is seikei on which you establish your living. We call clocks and watches tokei. We use them to check the time. Let me list other instruments you can measure something.

  • A thermometer is ondokei, of which the ondo is temperature.
  • A pluviometer is uryōkei, of which the ryō is amount.
  • A speedometer is sokudokei, of which the sokudo is speed.
  • An accelerometer is kasokudokei, of which the ka means to add and the sokudo is speed.
  • A psychrometer is kanshitsukei, of which kanshitsu is dry and wet.
  • A blood pressure gauge is ketsuatsukei, of which the ketsuatsu means blood pressure.
  • An instrument to measure sugar content is tōdokei, of which the tōdo is sugar content.
  • An anemometer is fūsokukei or fūryokukei. The soku of fūsoku means speed.
  • A seismometer is jishinkei. Jishin is an earthquake.
  • A scale is taijūkei, of which the jū means weight.
  • A clinical thermometer is taionkei, of which the on is temperature.

As you can see, the suffix kei is equivalent to the suffix –meter.

Sum (Calculation)

Keisan is calculation. San means to count. Kaikei is accounting. Kai means to meet. Kakei is household accounts. Ka means home. Tōkei is statistics. Tō means to unify.
